Frequently Asked Questions

What level do you teach?

All ages, including adults and pre-school.

What are your qualifications?

My qualifications are listed in my 'About Me' section in detail, but I have an English Degree, a Classroom Assistant qualification, and a CELTA qualification, including many more.

Are you a qualified teacher?

No; while I don't have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), I am more than qualified to tutor your child/you. I have studied many of the GCSE syllabuses. I have always referred to myself as a tutor, not a teacher.

Have you worked with children with special needs?

Yes, on many occasions and in many different settings, including children with autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and anxiety issues.

How do you deal with some of these needs?

I take it at the client's speed, and if they need extra time and space, I give them that. I have worked with teenagers who hate the camera being on, and that's okay by me. I tailor my lessons to the client's strengths.

What is your teaching style like?

Fun, quirky and relaxed!

Why does 1:1 work so well?

I am a firm believer that everyone should have access to 1:1 tuition! I think it's wonderful because we can do it the client's way. I have worked with so many children who are scared of having all the focus on them and then grow to love learning as they realise they get all the attention and take their lessons at their speed and at their level. Some children struggle in a classroom environment; maybe they are self-conscious about speaking in front of their peers for fear of embarrassing themselves, maybe some children hate reading aloud, or some children get left behind or find school boring because they are at a different level - in that case, 1:1 is for you! My classroom environment is set up so that my students are encouraged to try, but not worry if they get it wrong. I've taught students who hate school but thrive in a 1:1 environment.

What is your motto?

Turn up, try, have a go and don't be afraid to make mistakes - it's how we all learn! If you're not sure; have a go, or ask - but I always try and encourage my students to have a try first - you risk nothing by getting it wrong!

Do you only teach online lessons?

Depends on where you live! I'm based in the North East of England, and I find online lessons easier, but I do have some face-to-face lessons, providing they are local.

How much do you charge?

It varies! Online lessons will always be cheaper, and I will always make a promise to try and keep my costs as low as possible. Prices vary from £20-30, depending on circumstances. I will also offer a discount for siblings.

Can you give an example of some lessons you've taught?

Anything from Shakespeare to modal verbs to teaching English comprehension to students in Qatar! That's the beauty of this job; you never know what will turn up!

Wait, you're not just based in the UK?

No; the beauty of working online means I have tutored students in China, Spain, Vietnam and Qatar to name a few!

Incredible tutor

Wow, what can I say?! Katy has been an incredible tutor and boosted my son's confidence so much that English has gone from his least favourite subject to one that not only he really enjoys but is getting an A grade in for his end of year assessments. We found Katy at just the right time (end of Year 4) and her humour, kindness, patience and passion have transformed my son's work. It's been lovely to hear the two of them laughing away during the sessions as Katy really makes every one fun and enjoyable. We would highly recommend Katy as she is an absolute star!

Katy is a wonderful tutor and has been tutoring my daughter for two years and she loves her lessons. Katy has been absolutely fantastic and has helped my daughter through her GCSEs. Katy’s ability to connect and engage with my daughter has been key to this relationship building. I’d really recommend Katy, she is lovely.

Amazing tutor!! Katy has really helped to boost both my grades and my confidence with English. She is motivating and helps me in a constructive way so I can improve on my exam technique and my knowledge of texts. She is super fun, friendly and bubbly and is easy to talk to and have a conversation with.
